Customer Reviews about Jelsema Veterinary Clinic

  • These guys are great! I've known Terry and his family for many years. While visiting Michigan, one of my dogs injured himself. They squeezed me in right away and were very caring. Their clinic is beautiful and everyone was very professional. Would highly recommend them !

This place is adequate. There is a phenomenon in West Michigan of vets pushing unnecessary things on pet owners. Like telling you that certain types of flea/tick/heartworm medicine aren't good and then not being able to answer basic questions about why, trying to sell you multiple other medications that are much higher in price, not price matching websites, and then telling us we needed dog flu shots, when in reality our dogs are not "high-risk" for such vaccines. Be wary of recommendations.

We went to Jelsema to have our dog's teeth cleaned. Two years previously we had this done on the east side of the state. The first vet we met with at Jelsema was very kind, answered all of our questions, and made us feel confident in choosing their office. We were told his teeth looked like grade 1 but that things may come up on the X-ray, which we understood. We were told that drop off was between 8/8:30 and his cleaning would be done around 12 and we would get a call letting us know when to pick him up, likely around 2 or 2:30. On the day of the cleaning, 2:30 came around and still no call. I called the office and was met with a surprised response from reception asking if we had scheduled a time already. I said we hadn’t and were told we’d get a call and never got one. We were told to pick him up at 4:20 with no explanation why it was two hours later. We were also told that our dog did fine and everything went well. Hearing that everything went fine I assumed everything went as explained and nothing abnormal was found on xray. We were expecting around a $260 bill. When we arrived to pick up our dog, the receptionist told us the bill was $710. I was shocked and asked about the price difference but the receptionist could not give me an answer. They sent me back to a room to speak with a vet. I assume that had I not asked, they would have given me my dog with no explanation for what happened during his cleaning. The vet that spoke with me said he could not speak to what the other vet did. Meaning that the vet who did our cleaning had no plans to talk to us. The vet tech came in with x-rays to explain that the teeth were infected. There seems to be a major lack of communication in this office. When my dog had his teeth cleaned at another office the vet called me once my dog woke up to let me know how he did and that a tooth needed to be extracted. They also met with me when I picked up my dog. If a bill is going to be $450 more than a customer expects, I assume that there would an explanation or warning to that customer before they showed up. When we looked over our write up there was only tartar checked off and no mention of periodontal disease as the vet below states so therefore I am not confident in the reasoning behind his extractions. When we went in for our follow up a week later they took my dog back to the vet without the vet meeting with us as we sat in the front lobby. She didn't even acknowledged us when she came out to speak with reception. This is highly unprofessional and shows questionable customer relations. I would not have expected this from an office with such high reviews. My fiancée was very upset the day of his teeth cleaning when we did not hear from the office as expected and worried that something happened to our dog. This is not to mention the price difference at Jelsema. My sister’s dog had 19 teeth removed and their bill was $450. My mother’s dog had 10 teeth removed and their bill was $300. My dog had THREE teeth removed and the bill was $710. Their dogs are similar sized, all had xrays, and my sister's dog's procedure lasted a very long time and was high risk due to his age. The first vet we met with took off about $100 from our bill stating that the communication break down should not have happened (the $58 he mentions is from incorrect billing). However, there was still no communication when we went in for our check up and that tells me that this is standard practice for this facility. There were other communication breakdowns as well. Our invoice ended up being 768.43 before they had taken off discounts, not the 710 originally stated. I also included a picture of the write up that only states tartar and not the periodontitis as the vet below mentions. We did check off perform necessary procedures and had they called during the procedure to ask we would have said the same. Hence why that was not something I was upset over as long as it was necessary - however, reasoning was not clear from our write up when my fiance reviewed everything since she could not pick up the dog that day.
